This may be a debut album, but it is clearly not the work of an inexperienced band.
Let’s start from the beginning. Ethereal Rot is a supergroup formed in Portland, Maine, in 2019 by former members of The Last King, Sawtopsy, and Sonic Pulse. Drawing on years of experience and refined musicianship, the band first released the EPs Until Existence Is Diminished Entirely (2020) and Cadaverine Skies (2023) before unveiling their self-titled full-length, Ethereal Rot. That experience is evident throughout the album: while firmly rooted in contemporary technical death metal, it avoids empty virtuosity and instead blends sheer brutality with atmosphere and a cosmic undercurrent that gives the record a compelling and unmistakable character.
The opening track, The Beckoning Contagion, immediately establishes the band’s musical language through fractured riffs, relentless tempo shifts, and an unsettling atmosphere that serves as a manifesto for the entire album. That Which Dwells raises the tension even further, balancing explosive bursts of aggression with darker, more expansive passages. Festum Terrae stands out as one of the album’s strongest moments, striking an almost perfect balance between technical precision, groove, and melodic awareness. With Ophidian Womb, Ethereal Rot ventures into even more oppressive territory, building a crushing crescendo of dissonance and weight that culminates in one of the record’s most intense performances. Transversing the Cosmic Plains broadens the album’s atmospheric scope, unfolding through more intricate arrangements and progressive leanings that give the tracklist room to breathe without sacrificing its aggression. The closing track, Into the Naught, brings the journey to an end with a composition that feels almost contemplative in its darkness, seamlessly merging brutality with cosmic overtones. Rather than delivering a final cataclysmic blow, it leaves the listener suspended in a cryptic, lingering conclusion.
There’s little doubt about it: Ethereal Rot could hardly have asked for a stronger full-length debut. Their sound is deep, incisive, and packed with creative ideas—qualities that make their experience and personality immediately apparent. If this record is any indication, they have every chance of refining their craft even further in the years to come.
