TORONTO (ON), The Phoenix - 04/23/2026
Toronto’s metal scene comes together inside one of its most iconic venues for a night dedicated to melodic death metal. The Phoenix Concert Theatre hosts a highly anticipated Canadian stop featuring Dark Tranquillity and Soen as co-headliners, with Persefone opening. Doors open at 7 PM, and though the line moves quickly, the strong turnout signals an intense, packed night ahead.
PERSEFONE
At 7:15 PM sharp, Persefone takes the stage, kicking off the night’s proceedings. With seven full-length albums under their belt, the Andorran outfit stands as one of Europe’s strongest names in melodic/progressive death metal. Their live performance is just as compelling as their studio work, driven by the charisma of frontman Daniel Flys, who keeps the crowd engaged through his commanding presence and delivery. The set leans heavily on their latest EP Lingua Ignota: Part 1, while also drawing from Aathma and Spiritual Migration. Though their slot is relatively short, it’s more than enough to win over the audience: the first mosh pits break out early, and the crowd steadily grows louder, cheering the band track after track until a satisfying closing moment.

SOEN
Soen may be the most restrained act on the bill in terms of sound, but they are no less seasoned. Led by Joel Ekelöf, the Swedish band has spent over 16 years honing its craft, releasing seven studio albums and featuring high-caliber musicians such as Lars Åhlund and former Opeth drummer Martin Lopez. Their experience is evident in a precise live execution. The set spans their discography, with a focus on their latest release, Reliance. Behind the band, visual backdrops enhance the atmosphere, adding depth to the performance. The second half feels notably intense, as tracks like Indifferent, Lascivious, and Discordia evoke a surge of emotion, highlighting both vulnerability and power while every band member performs at their peak. As expected, Soen leaves a strong impression—not with heaviness, but with precision and atmosphere. They exit smiling, evidently satisfied with the response.

DARK TRANQUILLITY
By this time, anticipation in the room builds. When Dark Tranquillity takes the stage, they do so with explosive energy. As pioneers of the Gothenburg melodic death metal sound, they require little introduction. That legacy is shared with fellow hometown acts like In Flames and At The Gates, to whom Mikael Stanne pays tribute by wearing a shirt honoring Tomas Lindgren, whose passing last September left a significant void in the scene. It’s a fitting backdrop for what follows. The opening is nothing short of blistering: a deadly trio of tracks from The Gallery—Punish My Heaven, The Emptiness From Which I Fed, and Lethe—immediately ignites the crowd. Songs from Character, including The New Build and My Negation, slot seamlessly into the setlist, maintaining the momentum. One of the night’s highlights comes with Atoma, where guitarists Johan Reinholdz and Peter Karmark shine with palpable passion. The energy remains high throughout, and tracks like Unforgivable and Terminus evoke excitement, keeping the audience engaged before the band closes with the powerful Misery’s Crown. No one leaves disappointed. The night passes in a surge of energy and enthusiasm, reflected in the band’s wide smiles and jubilant gestures as they take their final bow amidst waves of applause and ovation.
