Extreme is the way

FUMING MOUTH – The Ringing Bell

The Massachusetts outfit have reached the peak of their songwriting, delivering one of the strongest extreme metal releases of the summer.

Fuming Mouth are no strangers to the extreme metal scene. Since forming in 2013, the Massachusetts outfit may have released only a handful of records, but each one has left a significant mark.

Their debut, The Grand Descent (2019), and the second full-length Last Day of Sun (2023) showcased a band with tremendous potential, blending death metal and crust punk into a sound that quickly captured fans’ attention. Then, following frontman Mark Whelan’s battle with leukemia, Fuming Mouth poured every ounce of physical and emotional strength into getting back on their feet. The result is The Ringing Bell, their most inspired and emotionally charged work to date, transforming personal suffering into a devastating yet cathartic listening experience that maintains relentless intensity from beginning to end.

Cheat Death opens the album with just over two minutes of pure hostility, a mission statement built on razor-sharp riffs and an overwhelming sense of urgency that never lets up. From there, Self-Exhumed raises the stakes even further with an even more direct and brutal approach, driven by crushing tempo shifts and grooves that emphasize the band’s hardcore roots. Finally, Fearless stands out as one of the record’s defining moments, featuring more dynamic songwriting that balances crushing heaviness with melodic flourishes without sacrificing an ounce of intensity. Lead single A Blaze of Nihilism is among the album’s most immediate and memorable tracks. Its cutting riffs, infectious chorus, and constant tension make it an obvious future live staple. Meanwhile, After Oblivion keeps the pressure high through a darker, more suffocating atmosphere, highlighting the band’s strong affinity for classic Swedish death metal. Hidden in the Moor then eases the pace slightly in favor of a sinister, oppressive mood, further demonstrating the group’s growing compositional maturity. Vivid Revelations shifts the album back into high gear with a compact burst of destructive energy, while the brief Flourishing Flesh delivers concentrated violence without a single wasted moment. Then the title track, The Ringing Bell, serves as the emotional centerpiece of the record—massive, epic, and infused with a profound sense of catharsis that perfectly encapsulates the band’s journey. Barbarian Scourge launches another full-scale assault with colossal riffs and an unforgiving rhythm section, providing one of the album’s most savage moments. Finally, Respect Mortality closes the record on a powerful note, combining sheer brutality with hard-earned acceptance and leaving listeners with a feeling of resilience rather than despair.

With The Ringing Bell, Fuming Mouth has held nothing back. Every ounce of time, determination, and emotion invested in this record has paid off, resulting in what is unquestionably the strongest release of their career. As a whole, the album seamlessly blends death metal, hardcore, and crust punk into a cohesive and compelling whole, standing as one of the finest extreme metal albums released this summer.
