Never underestimate a band like Archgoat. Since their reunion, the Finnish veterans have kept moving forward without ever looking back, consistently proving their worth, sharpening their craft, and further cementing their position as absolute leaders in the most savage realms of black/death metal.
Their previous releases, The Luciferian Crown and Worship the Eternal Darkness, had already made that clear. On both albums, the band introduced a slightly more refined approach to their sound without sacrificing an ounce of aggression, combining the primal, bestial nature of their music with cleaner, more defined production. Nightbringer, Lightbringer follows precisely the same path.
The opener, Invocation 666, sets the scene before the title track kicks in, delivering everything one would expect from Archgoat: rotten, primitive riffing, an incredibly tight death/black attack, and the cavernous vocals of Lord Angelslayer, sounding as though they were being summoned straight from the depths of a crypt. The constant shifts between furious bursts of speed and slower, heavier passages give the track a particularly evocative quality. The Dawn to Armageddon stands among the album’s most elaborate cuts, built around a succession of riffs that keeps the tension high throughout while allowing the band to explore a stronger atmospheric dimension without ever compromising their trademark brutality. Iconoclasm the Nazarene takes a more straightforward approach, packing an almost animalistic level of ferocity into just over three minutes. Blood of Jesus Spilling upon the Earth, meanwhile, pushes further into the band’s darker side, with the cleaner production giving the bass and drums a tangible physical weight that is absolutely crucial to Archgoat’s sound. The Stygian Millennium provides one of the record’s more atmospheric moments, revealing another side of the band. At the same time, Invocation 999 serves as a second gateway into the album, effectively splitting it in two before Keys of Hell and of Death come roaring back with sharper riffs and utterly devastating drumming. The Light Behind the Horns is one of the album’s most evocative tracks, driven by riffing that seems to pull the song deeper and deeper into an infernal vortex, while the keyboards add an extra layer of atmosphere. Reaper of Christianity, by contrast, is a full-on frontal assault: direct, vicious and utterly relentless. The drumming of Goat Aggressor and the guitar work of Ritual Butcherer lock together to create a dense, punishing wall of sound. At the same time, Angelslayer’s guttural, inhuman vocals remain one of the band’s most instantly recognizable trademarks. Finally, Obsidian Reflection of Anti-Light brings the album to a close with a runtime of over five minutes, using its extended length to build a massive, oppressive finale. It brings together all the elements that define the record — primitive riffing, blast beats, ritualistic atmospheres, cavernous vocals and slower, crushing passages — into a conclusion that gives the album a strong sense of cohesion and finality.
It is certainly not a groundbreaking release, but Nightbringer, Lightbringer represents another step forward for Archgoat, once again demonstrating their mastery of the subgenre that made their name and continues to place them among its most important practitioners. This is an album that never lets its intensity drop; instead, it expands on it, introducing new elements across the tracks without ever losing sight of the band’s unmistakable identity.
And that is ultimately the hallmark of a band that knows its craft inside out: Archgoat do not need to reinvent their sound when they have mastered it so completely.
