In 2026, Ceremonial Worship is active once again. The Greek one-man band has carved out a place for itself within the black metal scene, particularly within its country’s distinctive tradition. This is no easy feat, considering that the Hellenic scene is widely regarded as one of the strongest in the genre: Rotting Christ, Varathron, and Necromantia are just three of the major names that have emerged from it and have, beyond any doubt, achieved cult status.
Spiros, the mastermind behind the project, operating under the moniker High Priest C.W., has been active for roughly a decade. With Ode to Dionyssus and Seven Gateways to Eternal Misanthropy, both released in 2022, he demonstrated a strong command of the characteristic sounds of Greek black metal. He further consolidates that approach with Between Sleep and Death, an album that remains deeply rooted in Hellenic black metal without simply imitating its forebears. Its sound is aggressive and uncompromising, with riff repetition and atmosphere often taking precedence over compositional variety.
The opening Intro is atmospheric and ritualistic, dominated by synthetic textures and a steadily growing sense of unease, setting the stage for Hate Spells, the album’s true baptism of fire. It is a raw, icy, and straightforward track built around razor-sharp riffs, blast beats, and completely abrasive vocals. It does not reinvent the wheel, but its immediacy and sincerity make it one of the record’s most effective moments. Towards Nothingness expands the band’s atmospheric and melancholic side while retaining the ferocity of black metal, introducing more melodic riffs and an overall progression that recalls both the Hellenic tradition and certain strains of second-wave European black metal. Cursed Abominations returns to more brutal, obsessive territory, relying on insistent riffing that prioritizes impact and repetition. Where the Shadow Awakes, on the other hand, is one of the album’s more dynamic tracks, with thrash-inflected riffs providing additional rhythmic drive and partially breaking the hypnotic character established by the preceding songs. Esoteric Struggle is arguably the album’s strongest moment. Here, the epic and distinctly Mediterranean character that sets Hellenic black metal apart comes to the forefront, with solemn riffs and an almost triumphant atmosphere coexisting with the genre’s inherent ferocity. Shadows From Hell shifts gears once again, introducing heavier and more primal influences, with certain passages recalling Celtic Frost. Pantheon of Suffering then brings the distinctly Hellenic element back into focus, combining aggression, atmosphere and riffing with an almost ritualistic quality. Finally, Tower of Endless Nights closes the album without attempting to deliver a spectacular or conclusive finale. Instead, it maintains the tension established throughout the record before gradually fading away almost naturally, leaving behind the same darkness with which the album began.
Overall, Between Sleep and Death is an album that works primarily because of its atmosphere, identity, and consistency. Ceremonial Worship does not stray far from the Greek black metal tradition, blending it with second-wave influences to create a deliberately raw and aggressive sound. Perhaps the album’s main weakness is its excessive reliance on certain riffs and structural patterns. At the same time, however, this repetition is part of what gives the record its distinctive character. Between Sleep and Death is by no means a revolutionary release, nor does it attempt to be. Instead, it is a focused statement from a project intent on expressing its own identity within a well-established tradition. The future of Ceremonial Worship certainly looks worth keeping an eye on.
