Psycroptic are one of those rare bands that have managed to remain virtually flawless within the technical death metal scene. Across nearly three decades of activity, they’ve released nine albums, consistently proving not only that they’re at the top of their game, but also that they’re still brimming with fresh ideas without sacrificing even a fraction of their remarkable musicianship.
Maintaining the same stylistic identity for so long is no easy feat, and The Pulse of Annihilation is yet another testament to that achievement. It demonstrates that unwavering consistency doesn’t have to result in stagnation or monotony. Then again, Jason Peppiatt and company have never been the kind of musicians to deliver anything remotely dull.
The album kicks off with Ashes of a New Dawn, an explosive opener packed with swirling riffs and relentless energy that immediately establishes the band’s intent. That momentum carries seamlessly into Gathering a Venomous Herd, which raises the intensity even further through a masterful blend of groove and surgical precision, making it one of the album’s most immediate and memorable cuts. A Sword of Me leans more heavily on the interplay between intricate technical passages and slower, weightier sections, showcasing songwriting that’s rich without ever feeling excessive. No Time for the Weak is a compact burst of adrenaline—ferocious, direct, and driven by Dave Haley‘s phenomenal drumming. At over six minutes, Our Pillars Fall serves as the album’s epic centerpiece, allowing its themes to unfold through constant shifts in atmosphere while maintaining an unwavering sense of tension. Annihilation Pulse returns to controlled aggression with razor-sharp riffs and an especially impactful instrumental hook. At the same time, No Blade of Grass stands out thanks to its irresistible groove and some of the most captivating guitar work on the entire record, making it one of the strongest highlights. To Embrace This Curse effortlessly balances sheer brutality with more measured moments, demonstrating how naturally the band can build compelling dynamics without compromising their technical complexity. Finally, Forging the Crown closes the album with authority, bringing together every strength showcased throughout the record in a powerful and memorable finale.
There was never much reason to doubt Psycroptic‘s latest effort. Few bands can match the level of consistency they’ve maintained over the years, refining and perfecting a style that continues to sound inspired rather than predictable. The Pulse of Annihilation represents the very best the band could deliver with the formidable arsenal of technical skill and compositional expertise at their disposal. Once again, the result is exactly what listeners have come to expect from Psycroptic: nothing short of impeccable.
