MILAN, Legend Club - 10/18/2022
October 18 in Milan felt like a night out in New York, with shows hitting every corner of the city: at Teatro Dal Verme, Uriah Heep celebrated 50 years of career, while at Slaughter Club in Paderno Dugnano, Hypocrisy joined forces with Septicflesh for an evening drenched in melodic death metal.
And if that weren’t enough, the Legend Club hosted a truly unmissable night for metalheads: Vektor, one of the sharpest modern thrash acts, finally returned to Italy. The Arizona thrashers hadn’t played here since the Bikers Festival in 2016 near Bergamo, and a European tour had been repeatedly postponed—pandemic included. After years of waiting, Vektor were back, bringing along Dutch tech-thrashers Cryptosis and Swiss acts Comaniac and Algebra. Four bands, each with its own identity, coming together for a night of tight, cerebral, and mind-bending thrash metal.
Despite it being a Tuesday, fans poured in from all over Italy, proof that the evening promised a relentless onslaught of riffs and technical fury.
ALGEBRA
At 7:20 PM, the doors open and Algebra kicks off the night. The Swiss veterans, 14 years into their career, have released a demo, an EP, and four full-lengths, with the latest Chiroptera dominating tonight’s set. A few older tracks sprinkled in round out the performance. While the band’s stage presence leans towards static, their technical chops more than make up for it. Frontman Ed Nicod drives the set with intensity, turning their precise, complex arrangements into a punchy, aggressive opening that sparks the first headbanging of the night.

COMANIAC
After a short break, Comaniac takes the stage. Right away, the Swiss four-piece set out to heat up the crowd, entertain, and flex their technical prowess. Jonas Schmid shines as both guitarist and vocalist, perfectly synchronized with Valentin Mössinger, delivering the brutal precision of their recordings live. Compared to Algebra, Comaniac brings a higher level of technical sophistication. Stefan Häberli’s drumming is surgical, and Fabian Völker’s six-string bass adds depth and complexity. Their set leans heavily on Holodox, but older material injects variety, culminating in a thunderous finale with 1, 2, Rage, priming the audience for the next act.

CRYPTOSIS
Next up, Dutch tech-thrash trio Cryptosis takes the stage. Laurens Houvast (vocals/guitar), Frank te Riet (bass), and Marco Prij (drums) emerged from Distillator, already known for their two solid albums. As Cryptosis, they’ve released Bionic Swarm, a technical, fast, and cerebral thrash album packed with intricate structures. Two screens flank the stage, projecting visuals that amplify the sci-fi vibe. From Overture 2149 onward, the band demonstrates impeccable tightness and precision. Songs like Death Technology and Conjuring the Egoist showcase old-school thrash influences while staying highly original. Houvast leads with charisma and raw energy, keeping the set intense and precise. Closing with Flux Divergence, Cryptosis exited to deafening applause, leaving the crowd buzzing for the headliners.

VEKTOR
The moment everyone had been waiting for finally arrives. Legend Club is nearly packed as Vektor prepares to take the stage. Their career has been defined by technical mastery and boundary-pushing creativity, from Black Future to Outer Isolation, culminating in the audacious Terminal Redux. Few bands, aside from Voivod, have shown such a capacity to evolve thrash metal while staying completely original. After a long soundcheck, the lights dim and a sci-fi melody ushers in the band. David DiSanto and his crew explode onto the stage. They immediately send the crowd into a cosmic thrash journey with Charging the Void. DiSanto and Erik Nelson’s guitar work is razor-sharp. Newcomers Stephen Coon (bass) and Mike Ohlson (drums) lock in flawlessly. During LCD (Liquid Crystal Disease), every complex passage hits with studio-like precision, proving their technical wizardry. Highlights from Black Future and Tetrastructural Minds follow, showcasing DiSanto-Nelson riff interplay, with Nelson visibly moved by the audience’s energy. Newer material like Dead by Dawn keeps the momentum before diving back into Terminal Redux with Collapse and Recharging the Void. Just when it seems over, the crowd demands more—and Vektor delivers a final, explosive Asteroid, closing a night of technical thrash brilliance.
