Extreme is the way

UNVIÂR – Disglaç

The Friulian band have delivered a sensational debut album, standing out as one of the most compelling releases in the Italian black metal scene.
Black metal can express anything: occultism, nature, tradition, and folklore. These last elements are rooted in Italy, especially in its language. Every region has its own dialect, shaped by origins, legends, myths, and history. Among Italian black metal musicians, the use of local dialects in lyrics is increasingly common. Bands from all regions—Imago Mortis, Inchiuvatu, and Scuorn, each from a different area—have built identities around this. Now, Unviâr joins their ranks.

The Friulian outfit features Luca Franzin (bass), Giulia Zuliani (drums), Manuel Scapinello (guitar), and Daniele Tollon (vocals, guitar). They arrive at their full-length debut Disglaç after releasing the EP Faliscjis two years ago. On that earlier release, their sound had already taken shape: a blend of classic Scandinavian black metal and American atmospheric black metal. The group’s defining trait—lyrics in Friulian—makes the music unique. This combination flows seamlessly, long and majestic, beginning with the cello and setting the album’s symbolic winter. It unfolds through slow builds and sudden bursts of fury.

Corints is more direct and aggressive, placing greater emphasis on vocals. The title track is the album’s conceptual core—more elaborate and dynamic, shifting between acoustic passages, epic moments, and harsher sections. Ritîr takes a traditional black metal approach while carrying a strong introspective edge. Sul Ôr, again featuring cello, closes on a contemplative note. It moves from a slow, suspended opening to a more intense middle section and a descending finale.

By the end of the listen, it’s impossible not to be struck by this record. Disglaç is not just an album—it’s a symbolic and spiritual journey. The lyrics might suggest a purely folk sound at first, but Unviâr instead embraces a more atmospheric, immersive, and profound approach. This style blends perfectly with their themes and transports the listener into the frozen, mist-covered landscapes of Friuli. It’s only their debut, yet it already establishes them as one of the most compelling acts in the Italian underground scene.
