The Greek metal scene is one of the most vibrant, full-bodied, and surprising in the world. Across every extreme subgenre—especially black metal—you can find standout releases that have turned this country into a hub for bands with international recognition. Even war metal fans are familiar with Greek acts, and Unholy Archangel is a prime example.
The duo, Agisilaos and Iapetos, have been active since 1996 but have a relatively lean discography: aside from four split releases, they’ve released only two demos, two EPs, and a single full-length, Obsessed by War (2010). Quantity might be low, but the quality more than makes up for it, as proved by their second EP, The Wrath of Kosmosistis (2003).
Fans of Kawir will notice some parallels: the same country, the same scene, and even a similar thematic inspiration rooted in Greek mythology and paganism. Stylistically, though, the paths diverge sharply. Where Kawir relies on epic melodies, poetic lyrics, and odes to gods and Hellenic heritage, Unholy Archangel channels a more catastrophic, nihilistic approach—fully embodied in the war metal genre.
The Wrath of Kosmosistis hits hard from the start. The intro, Zeus Worship, is a ritualistic invocation to the king of Olympus, with lutes underscoring Greek-spoken narration. Then Storming Attack of the Makedonians kicks in with a furious growl and relentless blast beats, guitars tearing through tremolo-picked riffs and lightning-fast solos that show clear influences from Blasphemy and Revenge. The ferocity continues across the EP, with occasional slower, more deliberate moments—but the listener is never allowed a breather, fully immersed in a whirlwind of chaos, aggression, and destruction.
Clocking in at just 15 minutes, the EP is short but devastatingly intense. With The Wrath of Kosmosistis, Unholy Archangel proves themselves as top-tier musicians in their genre and cement their place in Greece’s war metal scene. It’s a seminal release that resonates far beyond the country’s borders—a brutal, unrelenting showcase of ferocious, no-compromise war metal.
