Extreme is the way

SUOL – Suol

While not the most game-changing release in recent memory, its captivating soundscapes make it impossible not to hit replay.
What a year for debuts in 2023. Across the metal spectrum, new bands have delivered—just like Suol.

Suol was founded this year by J. and P., two musicians whose identities are unknown. Their careers, however, are traceable: in five years, they’ve led four acts—Shagor, Weerzin, Dinbethes, and Ossaert (the last two solo projects)—rooted in European black metal with American atmospheric touches. With Suol, their sound is now sharper. The album doesn’t innovate much, but stands out for Dutch lyrics that revisit local legends and events around Zwolle and the IJssel, giving it a folk edge.

Hellevaart opens with a syncopated rhythm and simple, effective riffs echoing abyssal vocals. The tempo only increases at the end, paving the way for Slot Van Voorst. This track features airy riffs and choral sections, a signature of the album. Suddenly, you’re in 14th-century Holland, a village consumed by fire, with desolation and despair. The music guides through introspective and intense moments. Over de Geute stands out, beginning as a ballad and gradually adding ghostly, tuned female choirs, deepening its mysterious aura. Vrouwe IJssel leans into doom, but choral sections keep it fresh and chilling. After the crushing riffs of Wetterman’s Waanzin, the album closes with the expansive Bodemdrift, where the atmosphere reaches its peak.

Suol’s debut is strong. It may not be the most revolutionary album of recent years, but it flows smoothly, with layers that keep listeners coming back. The record grows with each listen. It’s dark and solemn, staying true to its primal roots. This is another fine chapter for Dutch black metal.
