Even though Escarnium has been active since 2008, they’ve never really been in the spotlight—but they’ve always found their own way to carry their music forward. Quietly and steadily, they’ve evolved step by step, culminating in an album that could finally earn them broader recognition.
The Salvador-based quartet has released three full-lengths so far: Excruciating Existence (2012), Interitus (2016), and Dysthymia (2022), quickly establishing themselves as one of Brazil’s top death metal acts. Their approach isn’t radically innovative, but it’s fresh, with Immolation-esque riffs made even clearer by the production, delivering both sheer violence and complexity. With their fourth album, Inexorable Entropy, the band raises the bar even higher—staying true to their core style while weaving in melodic and atmospheric passages that give each track a more diverse, textured feel.
The opener Relentless Katabasis immediately showcases this balance. It blends impact with melodic breathing space, evoking Ulcerate’s introspective moments. Tension never slackens, thanks to Nestor Carrera’s powerhouse drumming. Alongside Victor Elian’s commanding vocals, it pulls the listener into passages reminiscent of Dead Congregation and Phrenelith. It’s one of the album’s standout moments. The title track also stands out and acts as a manifesto for the release. Its composition perfectly balances aggressive and calmer sections.
Other highlights include Through The Depths Of The 12th Gate. This is a complex piece in which the band masterfully balances all compositional elements without falling into repetition or redundancy. The album flows seamlessly toward the closer Pyroscene’s Might. It wraps up just over half an hour of music with a tight, no-fluff structure.
With Inexorable Entropy, Escarnium shows full confidence in their craft. The album demonstrates that they’re ready to be noticed beyond the die-hard death metal crowd, packing in details that demand attention and pushing them ever higher in the underground scene. And it looks like they’re well on their way.
