CANNIBAL CORPSE – Chaos Horrific

Chaos Horrific stands as another sharp, confident release—free of hesitation—further enriching the band’s already impressive track record and ranking among their strongest recent outputs.
Whenever you mention Cannibal Corpse, it’s almost like saying the word “guarantee.” In 35 years, the masters of brutal death metal have delivered 16 albums—no breaks, no slowdowns, never derailed by the challenges of the pandemic or the loss of key members like Pat O’Brien. Their 2021 release, Violence Unimagined, which arrived during difficult times, could have easily fallen flat, but the Buffalo veterans knew exactly how to stay on track. Erik Rutan—no ordinary name—had already been working with the band as a producer since Kill, so choosing him as O’Brien’s replacement felt more than natural. His contribution has not only benefited the band but also helped shape another solid chapter, just like the latest Chaos Horrific, which perfectly follows in its predecessor’s footsteps.

Expect forty minutes of relentless, ferocious, unrestrained death metal. We’re long used to their trademark brutality, yet this album still hits hard, its essence unchanged since day one. No need to demand innovation—Cannibal Corpse return as they are: direct and uncompromising. The opening three tracks, especially lead single Summoned for Sacrifice with its stop-start dynamics and explosive momentum, channel the spirit of Butchered at Birth with fresh inspiration. Corpsegrinder’s growls are as sharp and commanding as ever, while drummer Paul Mazurkiewicz sounds even tighter and more refined. The guitar work strikes a perfect balance between Rob Barrett’s thrash-infused edge and Rutan’s heavier, more punishing style, inherited from his work with Hate Eternal. Last but certainly not least, Alex Webster delivers a flawless performance as both bassist and songwriter. He sticks to the classic formulas that made Cannibal Corpse iconic. The album flows seamlessly through slowdowns, bursts of aggression, and more atmospheric passages. All are wrapped in a crushing sonic assault. Tracks like the closing Drain You Empty, which opens with eerie, spacious riffs, and Frenzied Feeding, with its blistering second-half solo, stand out as prime examples. Blood Blind also deserves a mention. Despite its slower tempo, it maintains overwhelming intensity, evoking the crushing sensation of being pinned beneath a massive weight.

In the end, Chaos Horrific stands as a testament to Cannibal Corpse’s unyielding vision—focused, confident, and uncompromising. It not only upholds their formidable legacy but also reinforces their position as death metal stalwarts, delivering one of their strongest and most relevant releases in recent years.
