Since May of this year, the Italian underground has welcomed a new project to discover—one that is extravagant in identity and colorful in its approach.
Algoritmo Infernale is a Modena-based band formed by musicians already active in other projects. They conceal their real identities behind computer-themed nicknames: Uno (vocals), Zero (DJ, backing vocals), 404 (sampler, percussion, backing vocals), Malware (drums), Glitch (bass), and Virus (guitar). Stylistically, they deliver a mix of diverse sounds rooted in metal, yet completely free of the genre’s typical clichés, blending it with rap, industrial, and electronic elements, with lyrics entirely in Italian. In terms of style, the band can be loosely compared to Inner Code; however, their debut album 8bit features distinct differences in lyrical content, audience appeal, and song structure.
From the opening track, Toro di Falariade, the compositions reveal a high degree of heterogeneity. Thrashy drums, gritty guitars, and electronic inserts create a solid base for Uno’s Salmo-style vocals. At times, these vocals intensify into aggressive passages. Lyrically, the album’s concept revolves around contemporary social issues. The first track uses the metaphor of the Falariade bull. It references global warming and its long-term destructive effects. The second track, Far West, is noticeably calmer. Guitar solos stand out around the chorus. Caliente and Razza Aliena slow the pace further, though the latter keeps a heavy feel. The following duo, La storia si ripete and Accusatio Manifesta, return to a livelier mood. Accusatio Manifesta features an audio clip of Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni’s inauguration speech at Palazzo Chigi, with lyrics support the right to protest, even though the band identifies as apolitical. Fall-Out ramps up the tempo with darker vocals and strong guitar riffs. The closing track, Il Vuoto, is darker and more melancholic. It reflects on human relationships made cold and artificial by social media.
How to define this debut by Algoritmo Infernale? Conceptually, it’s deep, thought-provoking, and far from trivial in its depiction of today’s reality. Sonically, the foundation is solid, though as a very recent project, the band may need another release or two to fully mature. For fans of this type of sound, Algoritmo Infernale is certainly a project to watch, and it will be exciting to see what they can achieve with more experience and their evident potential.
