It has been ten years since their last EP, Exhumation of the Ancient, and even longer since their previous full-length, The Sleep of Morbid Dreams, released back in 2009. Yet despite the lengthy and troubled hiatus, the New Jersey death metal veterans remain as formidable as ever.
Beckoning the Void of Eternal Silence picks up exactly where the band left off, delivering the same oppressive and visceral death metal that has always defined their sound. Drawing heavily from both the Finnish and American schools of death metal, Funebrarum seamlessly blends old and new influences, with Incantation and Dead Congregation serving as the most obvious reference points.

Sa Nagba Amāru expands the band’s sonic palette through more intricate songwriting and an almost liturgical atmosphere, making it one of the album’s most distinctive moments. Through the Barren Halls of Grieving Emptiness injects a touch more speed without sacrificing the band’s doom-laden identity, resulting in one of the record’s most varied compositions. Into Dark Domains sinks even deeper into bleak territory, unfolding through a suffocating, carefully crafted crescendo, while Anhela Odor Mortuorum (The Adepts) strikes a balance between sheer brutality and subtle melodic undercurrents, highlighted by twin-guitar harmonies. From Rotting Burial Shrouds is arguably the album’s most immediate and aggressive track, packed with relentless blast beats, tempo shifts, and an irresistible groove. It is followed by Turning the Stones of Torment, which revisits the band’s more monumental side through constant shifts in intensity and another strong display of guitar work. Finally, The Whispering Cathedral (Epilogue) closes the record on a majestic note, combining funeral-paced doom, ghostly melodies, and an overwhelming sense of inevitable dissolution, leaving the listener completely consumed by darkness.
With Beckoning the Void of Eternal Silence, Funebrarum delivers exactly what longtime fans could have hoped for. From beginning to end, the album reaffirms the band’s authority within the genre, showing that years of setbacks have not diminished the spirit and conviction that have defined them since their earliest days.
