From the name alone, subtlety is clearly off the table. Coscradh, meaning “massacre” in Irish Gaelic, was formed in Dublin in 2015. The quartet has released a demo, two EPs, and two full-length albums. Their vision from the outset: uncompromising black/death metal with war metal aggression, raw production, relentless sonic attack, and doom-laced undertones. Nahanagan Stadial, their debut album, proved the power of their formula. Now, with Carving the Causeway to the Otherworld, their sound matures—more dissonant, cosmic, and steeped in Celtic myth.
Five Fifths Awaken launches the record like a druidic ritual—drones and mounting tension set the stage. The title track anchors the album, narrating a sacred Irish bogland roadway meant to commune with ancestors. Dissonant riffs, trance passages, and suffocating atmosphere turn the landscape into mystic terror. Adhradh Dé Ghoac, sung in Gaelic, plunges deeper: sacrifice and devotion to a war deity, summoned by oppressive tribal sounds. The Calling bridges earth ritualism to cosmic horror. Scythe of Saturn erupts with spiraling riffs, evoking apocalyptic collapse and fading memory. The finale, Opening the Gates to Styx, Nyx, Kerberos and Hydra, fuses Celtic and Greek myth into a vortex of chaos, cementing the album’s ritual as endless—a passage to the Otherworld now open.
It can be said without hesitation: Coscradh has made its mark. Not in a definitive sense just yet, but certainly with a remarkably strong statement. Carving the Causeway to the Otherworld is a mature and uncompromising record that highlights not only the band’s compositional creativity but also the depth of their thematic research, digging into the history of their homeland and weaving it into the album’s lyrical core. Ireland’s extreme metal scene is already packed with noteworthy acts, and Coscradh have unquestionably earned their place among the country’s most representative bands.
