Nearly thirty years after their formation, Abysmal Grief arrive at their seventh full-length, Taetra Philosophia, continuing to refine two defining aspects of their sound: theatricality and spectral atmosphere.
The Genoese trio has been recognizable since their early days precisely because of these elements, which make their doom metal darker, more picturesque, and evocative. Their music draws close to black metal in imagery and themes, yet remains firmly rooted in the classic doom framework.
The album opens with Deus Cornatus, a true sacramental invocation that sets the stage for the title track, the sonic and thematic manifesto of the record, built around obsessive riffs and a ritualistic pace. Ambulacrum Luctus introduces subtle shifts in rhythm and heightened tension while preserving the funerary atmosphere. Lumen ad Urnam is a brief, atmospheric interlude that emphasizes the ceremonial aspect of the work, before Corpus Mortuum brings the classic, dense, suffocating doom to the forefront. The album’s most ambitious moment comes with Speculum Fractum, a long and layered piece in which the band stretches time and slowly builds tension toward a dark, meditative climax. Labes Necrothytus’ vocals are hypnotic, ethereal, almost funereal, supported by the organ that underpins Regen Graves’ marching drums, his guitar work, and Lord Alastair’s bass. In just over nine minutes, the trio delivers some of their most evocative sections, alternating perfectly between tense passages and more airy, ethereal moments. The album closes with Lamentum, a subdued requiem that leaves a sense of emptiness and contemplation.
There’s no doubt: Abysmal Grief reaffirm themselves as one of Italy’s most accomplished acts in the doom metal scene. Their decades-long experience is evident, but so is their ability to convey the full essence of the genre and to create a dark, arcane atmosphere with a sound faithful to tradition. Taetra Philosophia is an enveloping and immersive album, reaching epic heights of scope comparable to Misfortune and Funeral Cult of Personality, and establishing itself as one of the most compelling Italian releases of the year.
