Extreme is the way

SINISTER GHOST – What’s Left of Human?

The Tuscan band confirms itself as one of the most compelling acts in the Italian underground scene with its second album—conceptually intense and packed with fresh ideas.
You could feel it coming: Sinister Ghost were gearing up to deliver a new album—this time with a revamped lineup, fresh stylistic and conceptual ideas, and the same fire that fueled their previous work.

Hailing from Viareggio, the band was originally conceived by Asmort and Synugoth, and had already made a strong impression with their debut, The Dark Abyss of Omerty (2022). It was a record that showcased their full potential—from a sound that blended black, death, and gothic metal into a cohesive mix, to highly dynamic vocals shifting in an instant from abyssal growls to piercing screams, and to horror-driven themes that fully embodied the band’s identity.

Nearly two years later, the confirmation has arrived. With the addition of Aelodh as second guitarist and Pontius behind the kit, the band has grown both in terms of lineup and artistic depth, forging their long-awaited sophomore effort, What’s Left of Human?. Here, the influences of Carach Angren, Behemoth, and Fleshgod Apocalypse merge into dark, spectral atmospheres.

Each track unfolds through unexpected twists, constantly pulling the listener deeper into its narrative. Right from the opener, Eden Is Our Home, the sound shifts relentlessly between bursts of speed, slower passages, and spoken narration—courtesy of Danny Metal—which enhances the album’s cinematic feel. The same approach carries through The Innocent’s Laugh and The House of Violin, where, fittingly, violin arrangements add a distinctive storytelling touch that has become something of a trademark. That narrative strength is especially evident in Ocean Avenue 112, a track centered on the Amityville murders, driven by excellent lyrical storytelling that seamlessly alternates between aggressive sections and more dialogue-driven moments. Similar twists surface in Stolen at Birth and As I Lay in My Coffin, where female vocals enrich intense, emotionally charged passages shaped by tempo shifts, piano interludes, and melancholic riffing. Closing duties fall to the title track, which opens with refined acoustic guitar arpeggios before erupting into explosive verses. Asmort’s acidic vocals lock in perfectly with the instrumentation, especially the guitars, whose solos in the slower sections add an extra layer of drama.

Expectations have not been disappointed. Sinister Ghost has nailed the challenge of both matching and surpassing their debut with an album that avoids predictability, boasting deep songwriting, cinematic melodies, and a strong emotional pull. What’s Left of Human? does justice not only to the band’s name—fully embodied in their music—but also to the now-solidified talent of each member, clearly ready to push their way onto a bigger stage.
