Rise From the Grave 2024

Live Report: Dismember’s Italian Show with Vomitory, Distruzione, and Special Guests

PARMA, Campus Industry - 05/11/2024

The date had been set months in advance—inevitable. Any death metal fan knew what would arrive: Rise From The Grave. The first band announced was not just any name. Dismember is an institution in death metal, which would be enough, but after 20 years away from Italy and a long hiatus, their appearance on May 11 at Campus Industry in Parma was unmissable.

Credit is also due to the rest of the lineup: the legendary Swedes were joined by Vomitory, fresh off their new album All Heads Are Gonna Roll, local hosts Distruzione, Americans Pessimist, and Italian acts Cadaveric Crematorium and Dead Chasm. The show promised a sensational experience, drawing a large crowd from near and far, eager to attend. At last, the long-awaited event began.

DEAD CHASM

By 16:30, a good crowd had gathered at Campus Industry, visible from the busy outdoor area. After drinks and conversation under the sun, 17:00 arrived—when Dead Chasm kicked things off. The young trio, active since 2020, played tracks from their self-titled EP and Sublimis Ignotum Omni. Their short but convincing set featured singer Lorenza De Rossi, who delivered a stellar performance and received enthusiastic applause from an engaged audience.

CADAVERIC CREMATORIUM

Meanwhile, fans queued for a meet-and-greet with the main acts. The stage was set for Cadaveric Crematorium, a Brescia-based combo with 28 years and five full-length albums to their name. A respected studio band—would their prowess translate live? Absolutely. From their entrance, it was clear they were all in. They sparked the night’s first mosh pit and quickly joined it. The singer dove into the crowd, shoulder to shoulder. His growl seemed to shake the walls of Campus Industry. The band delivered hits from their discography, finishing with a finale that drew enthusiastic applause.

Still, it sufficed for a substantial setlist, played in full. Their performance, more static, focused on instrumental precision over theatrics, but never disappointed. Frontman Ivan Alison excelled vocally. Drummer Tim Yueng hammered the kit, earning applause from an energized crowd. The evening’s momentum sustained, and everything flowed to a finale that was met with strong approval.

DISTRUZIONE

We’ve reached the final part of Rise From The Grave. No one was better suited to introduce it than Distruzione. What’s one of the earliest Italian death metal bands? Who’s the true hometown act on the lineup? No one knows Parma as they do. For these events, they run Bus 666—a shuttle that stops at city venues and offers food and drinks to participants. Today, they arrived early. When they hit the stage, their energy soared. On tracks like Stultifera Navis and Senza Futuro, Devid Roncai rallied the crowd. The audience answered with nonstop mosh pits, while Massimiliano Falleri and Dimitri Corradini delivered potent guitar and bass lines. Distruzione lived up to their name with a fiery, packed show, ending with Nel tuo Nome to deafening applause. It was the ultimate concert—and evening—for them.

Returning recently to the studio with All Heads Are Gonna Roll, they’re in enviable shape and keep their destructive energy blazing on stage. Wasting no time and skipping chatter, they launched relentless barrages that hit the audience nonstop. Composed, Erik Rundqvist unleashed a devastating growl, a power mirrored by the rest of the band, including drummer Tobias Gustafsson. Several tracks from the new album found a place on the setlist, alongside classic pieces from Blood Rapture and Redemption. Vomitory executed flawlessly, moving as a single unit and delivering what was arguably the best performance of the event.

DISMEMBER

Finally, the most awaited moment. The stage bathed in red—perfectly thematic—Dismember took the stage with a lineup that has set the standard in death metal. For this night, the legendary band chose not to focus solely on Like An Everflowing Stream as in previous shows. Instead, they gave the audience a taste of their entire discography, including tracks from Massive Killing Capacity, Hate Campaign, and their latest self-titled album. The blend worked seamlessly, thanks to the band’s mastery. David Blomqvist and Robert Sennebäck delivered flawless riffs. Fred Estby’s drumming and Richard Cabeza’s bass anchored the sound without ever disconnecting from the crowd. Matti Kärki—undisputed idol of the evening—was more than just a frontman. His energy and warmth toward the audience shone through. “It’s been a long time since the last time,” he said during a pause. He reaffirmed how wonderful it is to return to Italy and meet fans cheering them on. His joy was palpable. He even “conducted” the audience during the famous solo of Override of the Overture.
