Extreme is the way

Suffocation + Enterprise Earth + Sanguisugabogg + Organectomy

MILAN, Legend Club - 02/09/2024

It took less than a year for Suffocation to return to Italy. In fact, even less. Their last Italian show was on May 7, 2023, in Venice, where they performed alongside Fulci, Hobos, and Fate Unburied. Now, to promote their new album Hymns from the Apochrypha, the New York death metal veterans are back in the country. This time, they play in Milan, supported by a crushing lineup featuring Organectomy, Sanguisugabogg, and Enterprise Earth. The show at the Legend Club promises to be unmissable. It is not only for fans of technical and brutal death metal, but especially for anyone chasing bands that have written entire chapters in extreme music history. Unsurprisingly, the turnout is massive. The doors open at 6:30 PM—quite early—yet the line is already long at 6 PM. This is just the prelude to a bone-crushing evening that would sell out.

ORGANECTOMY

By 7 PM, Legend is half-full. The night ignites immediately as Organectomy takes the stage. The New Zealanders have released three studio albums and recently dropped the new single Tracheal Hanging. They are ready to unleash their sonic assault. From the very first track, the crowd comes alive. Though their set is short, there’s no time to breathe. Alex Paul and his bandmates deliver relentless breakdowns, unending double-kick drumming, and corrosive riffs. The pit erupts instantly and carries the energy straight through the end of their performance, which runs through hits from their entire catalog. It is a blistering start that does not disappoint.

SANGUISUGABOGG

After the explosive opening, many in the crowd are already battered from the early mosh pits as Sanguisugabogg takes over. Active since 2019, the Ohio-based band has carved a niche with a death metal style inspired by Mortician and Devourment, with a strong goregrind edge, particularly in the lyrics. The question of whether their studio aggression can translate live is quickly answered: Devin Swank commands the stage, with the rest of the band—especially drummer Cody Davidson—matching his intensity. Between vicious growls, punishing riffs, and unrelenting pogoing, the show hits hard, leaving a lasting impression on even the first-time attendees. Applause comes naturally at the set’s close.

ENTERPRISE EARTH

By the midpoint of the evening, the audience eagerly anticipates Enterprise Earth. Celebrating 10 years of their career on this tour, the Spokane band performs tracks from their fifth album, Death: An Anthology, released just the day before the concert. Their sound stands apart from the previous acts, blending deathcore with elements of djent, metalcore, and classic death metal. On stage, this diversity is evident: frontman Travis Worland switches effortlessly from deep growls to intense screams, even incorporating clean vocals, while the rest of the band maintains a tight, synchronized performance. The crowd responds with continuous circle pits and crowdsurfing, but it’s Worland who dominates the stage, even tossing off his shirt to escalate the intensity. By the end of their set, the band earns well-deserved praise before handing the stage over to the headliners.

SUFFOCATION

Finally, at 9:30 PM, it’s time for Suffocation. The crowd is still energetic and perfectly ready for the main event. Seeing Suffocation live is not just a concert; it’s an experience that demands preparation. Their music is hard-hitting, technical, and brutal. From the first notes of Seraphim Enslavement, the pit is an inferno. There’s nothing out of place on stage. Ricky Myers may not be Frank Mullen, but he proves himself with devastating growls. He is fully supported by Eric Morotti, whose drumming is both precise and relentless. Terrance Hobbs and Derek Boyer’s mastery is obvious, while Charlie Errigo’s presence adds even more weight to the performance. Legend is now a madhouse as the band delivers not just tracks from the latest album but also classic anthems like Pierced from Within, Effigy of the Forgotten, Breeding the Spawn, and Catatonia, all executed flawlessly. The audience responds with headbanging, stage diving, circle pits, and unceasing energy. Even after infecting the Crypts, when it seems the intensity might dip, the crowd refuses to relent. The band returns for two final devastating tracks—Bind Torture Kill and Clarity Through Deprivation—bringing the show to a perfect close. Suffocation’s set is more than a concert—it is a masterclass in technical brutality and stage command. The band leaves no doubt: they are still at the peak of extreme metal.
