Extreme is the way

Slayer Returns Out of Nowhere – What’s Next for the Metal Legends?

The titans of thrash metal have suddenly reunited, sparking all kinds of reactions and opening up new future scenarios.

November 30, 2019. Slayer took the stage at the Forum in Inglewood, California, for the last time after 38 years of a legendary career. That “farewell tour” lasted a year and a half, hitting every continent (some twice), and at the time, it really seemed like the end.

Those lucky enough to attend the Mediolanum Forum show on November 20, 2018, surely remember Tom Araya’s heartfelt “I’ll miss you” at the end of the set, delivered in perfect Italian—even though a second chance came on July 7, 2019, at Rock The Castle. But the feeling that these would be the band’s final shows was in the air.

Indeed, after disbanding, the iconic thrashers fell into complete silence regarding their future, and everything that leaked from their statements hinted at the absolute impossibility of seeing them active again. Then, suddenly, it happened:

“It gets you when you least expect it.” And it honestly didn’t seem real—but yesterday, February 21, 2024, Slayer officially announced their return to the stage with two headlining shows at Louder Than Life in Louisville, Kentucky, and Riot Fest in Chicago. Naturally, the news went viral worldwide, sparking every kind of reaction, differing opinions, and new scenarios—especially given the recent history between members that had recently come to light.

Kerry King’s Position

The lineup will remain the same: Tom Araya, Gary Holt, Paul Bostaph, and Kerry King. Sure, we couldn’t expect Dave Lombardo back in any way, and judging by King’s recent moves, even he seemed far from optimistic about a reunion. The guitarist recently founded a band of the same name, making his intentions for his future career quite clear. Not to mention, Bostaph is also part of the lineup.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, King stated, “No messages, no emails from Tom. If he called, I’d probably answer, but it depends on why.” So the idea of Slayer returning felt like a mirage—but it took just four days for him to change his mind: “Did I miss playing live? Absolutely. Slayer is very important to our fans, and the fans are important to us.” Words that, until a few days ago, seemed impossible—but now, they’re real, dissolving all tensions that once seemed unresolvable.

Reactions

The news wasn’t taken lightly. From the moment the announcement appeared on every platform imaginable, fans reacted in every way. And of course, reactions weren’t unanimous.

Some saw it as a Mötley Crüe 2.0 scenario: a heavily advertised farewell tour that would only return a few years later. We’ve seen it before, but from a band like Slayer, few expected it—given their authority, their consistency, and the integrity they’ve always shown in their sound, personality, and decisions.

On the other hand, the mere thought of seeing such a monumental band back on the road brought optimism—not just to those who never got the chance to see them live, but also to festival organizers, who suddenly have one more headliner to add to their lineup… and what a name it is!

Moreover, there are those who stayed neutral, simply eager to witness Slayer at their best and experience a night of extreme music with the masters who created and preserved it.

Behind the reunion

So, what’s behind this reunion?

Let’s start from this reason:
Of course, one might think of money, but ironically. Slayer isn’t in the financial straits of a band like Metallica, and with decades of success behind them, it’s hard to imagine they’re on the brink of anything.

It seems clear that the driving force is passion—the kind that moves everyone involved. Science isn’t needed to understand it: passion is what got things rolling. Tom Araya summed it up in an official statement: “Nothing compares to those 90 minutes on stage, sharing energy with our fans. Honestly, we missed it a lot.” Kerry King expressed similar sentiments, though he had just started exploring his own musical path.

Looking Ahead

Only time will tell if this reunion is the right move. For now, the band hasn’t announced plans beyond these two shows. Fans are left to wonder: what do we want from Slayer in 2024?

New material may be difficult, but not impossible. Their skill remains, as Repentless proved, but matching their classics will be challenging.

Though studio work is uncertain, Slayer’s live shows remain unmatched—combining intensity, stage presence, and signature pyrotechnics.

One thing is clear: Slayer is back and should not be underestimated.
